OMODA O5

Model Overview

The OMODA O5 is the first compact coupe SUV introduced by Chery’s global sub-brand OMODA, marking the inception of the brand’s global strategy. The model made its debut in China in July 2022 under the "OMODA 5" nameplate before rolling out to various international markets badged as the "Chery Omoda 5", "Chery O5", or "Chery C5". In its domestic market, the OMODA 5 was offered with 1.5T and 1.6T powertrain options, carrying official guide prices between RM92,900 and RM126,900. Overseas, the 2025 Malaysian facelift was launched under the "Chery O5" moniker, priced at RM116,800 (approx. RM183,000). Measuring 4,400 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,585 mm in height with a 2,630 mm wheelbase, it is positioned squarely in the compact SUV segment.

Design Language

The OMODA O5 embodies Chery’s evolved ‘Art in Motion’ 4.0 design philosophy, blending the athletic stance of a coupe SUV with bionic tech-inspired elements. Up front, a frameless matrix grille is flanked by split-level LED headlight clusters, delivering strong visual presence. Its profile is defined by a sleek fastback roofline and 18-inch smoked dual-tone sports alloy wheels, complemented at the rear by full-width flowing matrix LED taillights and a dual-tier progressive roof spoiler to accentuate its sporty coupe-SUV silhouette.

The overseas mid-life facelift brought further aesthetic refinements. On the Malaysian-spec "Chery O5", the front fascia adopts an EV-inspired "X-shaped" motif with a body-coloured grille and sleeker daytime running lights (DRLs), while the rear taillights gain smoked lenses with the deletion of the previous red trim strip, achieving a cleaner, more cohesive exterior look.

Powertrain & Performance

The OMODA O5 is offered with a choice of powertrains. In China, the 1.5T variant is paired with a CVT, producing 115 kW (156 PS) and 230 Nm of torque; the 1.6T version packs the Kunpeng Power 1.6TGDI engine mated to a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (7DCT), churning out 145 kW (approx. 197 PS) and 290 Nm of torque, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.8 seconds. For the 2025 Malaysian facelift, the "Chery O5" traded the CVT for a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) for more direct power delivery and crisper throttle response. WLTC combined fuel consumption figures vary depending on the trim and powertrain combination.

Chassis & Handling

Suspension hardware differs across variants of the OMODA O5. Early China-spec 1.5T models and select export markets used a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam setup. However, for the 2025 facelift (as seen on the Malaysian spec), Chery upgraded the rear suspension to an independent multi-link setup, providing tangible improvements in rear-axle ride comfort, bump absorption, and handling limits. Additionally, select overseas markets such as Australia offer an AWD GT variant equipped with an on-demand all-wheel-drive system. Steering is managed by an electric power steering (EPS) system tuned to balance effortless low-speed manoeuvrability with weighted road feel in Sport mode.

Cabin & Equipment

Inside, the OMODA O5 highlights the brand's focus on creating a tech-centric environment. All variants come standard with an immersive dual-screen cockpit featuring twin 10.25-inch or 12.3-inch displays. Infotainment duties are handled by the Lion 5.0 intelligent operating system, supporting Huawei HiCar natural voice interaction, facial recognition, gesture control, and keyless walk-up access. Apple CarPlay connectivity is standard across the board, catering seamlessly to iOS users.

The 2025 facelift brings substantial interior upgrades: the crystal gear knob has been replaced with a column-mounted electronic gear shifter, freeing up valuable storage space along the centre console; standard kit includes ventilated front seats, an 8-speaker Sony sound system, a wireless smartphone charging pad, dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate, and rear air-conditioning vents. The updated cabin also benefits from slimmer-bezel 12.25-inch dual integrated screens alongside upgraded soft-touch materials throughout.

Safety & Driver Assistance

Safety is a central pillar of the OMODA O5’s engineering. Built around a high-strength cage body structure, high-strength steel accounts for up to 78% of the chassis, with critical crash structures rated to withstand forces exceeding 1,800 MPa. The vehicle also earned a maximum 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, validating its crashworthiness and passive safety credentials.

In terms of active safety, the OMODA O5 is equipped as standard with a Level 2 semi-autonomous Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS, marketed as Level 2.5 in select regions). The suite comprises Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), and a 360-degree surround-view camera system. While detailed sensor specs have not been fully published, it stands out as one of the most comprehensively equipped ADAS packages in its price category.

Market Performance & Reception

The OMODA O5 has experienced contrasting reception between its domestic and overseas markets. In China's cut-throat RM100,000-bracket SUV segment, sales have hovered at modest triple-digit monthly volumes. This is largely attributed to severe market competition and a comparatively tighter cabin layout—particularly in rear-seat legroom—against segment rivals.

Conversely, the model has enjoyed strong momentum internationally, recording over 11,000 cumulative export sales even prior to the 2025 facelift. Across Australia, Russia, Malaysia, and European markets, the OMODA O5 has become a benchmark export model for Chinese brands, driven by its distinctive styling, generous equipment levels, and 5-star safety pedigree.

Furthermore, the all-electric Omoda E5 built on this platform is now locally assembled (CKD) in Malaysia and exported globally, bolstering OMODA’s new energy vehicle portfolio and charting a clear development path for the model line.
